Reflecting petawatt lasers off relativistic plasma mirrors: a realistic path to the Schwinger limit

Abstract The quantum vacuum plays a central role in physics. Quantum electrodynamics (QED) predicts that the properties of fermionic can be probed by extremely large electromagnetic fields. typical field amplitudes required correspond to onset ‘optical breakdown’ this vacuum, expected at light intensities >4.7×10 29 W/cm 2 . Approaching ‘Schwinger limit’ would enable testing major but still unverified predictions QED. Yet, Schwinger limit is seven orders magnitude above present record intensity achieved high-power lasers. To close considerable gap, promising paradigm consists reflecting these laser beams off mirror relativistic motion, induce Doppler effect compresses pulse time down attosecond range and converts it shorter wavelengths, which then focused much more tightly than initial light. However, faces experimental hurdle: how generate such mirrors? In article, we explain challenge could nowadays tackled using so-called ‘relativistic plasma mirrors’. We argue approaching coming years applying scheme latest generation petawatt-class lasers challenging realistic objective.
